INTERNSHIPS

At AFENYO-MARKIN, OKUTU & ASSOCIATES, Law students have a rare opportunity to obtain practical experience in a legal setting through our Associate Program. Interns are given the opportunity to work on actual cases, carry out research, and take part in client meetings as a summer associate. Our curriculum is meant to give you a thorough understanding of the legal field as well as assist them in developing important skills.

As an Intern Law Clerk at Afenyo Markin Okutu & Associates, I researched law, applied it to client scenarios, and drafted documents. As a legal researcher, I gained valuable skills in understanding the operations of a law firm and the importance of comprehending the law beyond just legislation and case law. This experience taught me more about the legal profession and its complexities.

During my time at Afenyo Markin Okutu & Associates, I discovered that the legal profession extends beyond just legislation and case law.

The knowledgeable staff made me feel welcome as a student, explaining court procedures and allowing me to participate in teleconferences, meetings, and hearings. The experience was a valuable learning opportunity, enhancing my understanding of the legal profession.

Over the past years , I had the opportunity to intern and serve as NSS personnel at Afenyo Markin Okutu & Associate. During this time I was able to apply the knowledge and skills I have gained in school. It was an enriching experience where I learned and collaborated with colleagues from diverse background.

At Afenyo Markin, Okutu & Associates, I have learned the true meaning to be a part of a high functioning team. Every person working on a task or a project is expected to give their best, regardless of their level of skills and experience.
We are taught to offer relevant and practical advice in Ghana’s intricate commercial environment rather than just reciting sections of laws and case names to our clients, how to conduct interviews of clients, how court processes are being made in reality and many more. Working with the firm has provided me with unique experiences that my peers did not encounter during their internships.

Whilst working as an Intern I undertook tasks which included, but were not limited to, researching the law and applying it to specific client scenarios, attending court sessions and drafting documents. In my time here, I have been able to see the real ‘behind the scenes’ of how a law firm operates.

I feel as though I have learnt a lot of invaluable skills whilst working at Afenyo-Markin, Okutu and Associates. Not necessarily just about the principles of the law, but about how the law operates. There are many little important details that slip through the cracks when we are studying at school alone. However, during my time, I have learnt there is far more to the legal profession and working as a lawyer than just legislation and case-law.
